Hispanic Leadership Fund Challenges Scope of “Electioneering Communications” Rules in Lawsuit Against the Federal Election Commission

DES MOINES, IA–The Hispanic Leadership Fund filed a lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission this week seeking clarification to cumbersome rules set forth by the Federal Election Commission surrounding what are called “electioneering communications.” This lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction finding that advertisements that reference “the government,” “the administration,” “the White House,” and that include unidentified audio of federal officials do not constitute clear and unambiguous references to a candidate for federal office. Mario H. Lopez, president of Hispanic Leadership Fund, said, “The Hispanic Leadership Fund continues to protect the rights of all groups that want to petition the government...

We Must Move to Repeal and Replace President Obama’s Unaffordable and Unpopular Health Care Law

WASHINGTON, D.C.–The Hispanic Leadership Fund released the following statement today from its President Mario H. Lopez, reacting to today Supreme Court ruling: “The facts are that on every count, President Obama’s healthcare law has failed all Americans, including working Hispanic families that continue to bear the brunt of his economic policies.  Insurance premiums have gone up, job creation has gone down, and unaffordable and skyrocketing costs have only worsened.  And we now see that the entire law is contingent upon raising taxes on ordinary middle-class Americans, which reveals yet another broken promise by President Obama. “There is no question that...

Wall Street Journal on What the Arizona Ruling Means for President Obama’s Reelection

Today’s Wall Street Journal discusses the effect of the Supreme Court’s recent Arizona ruling on President Obama’s efforts to reconnect with Hispanic voters, and features a quote from the Hispanic Leadership Fund: Mario H. Lopez, president of the Hispanic Leadership Fund, which advocates for free enterprise and limited government, said Monday’s ruling doesn’t offset Mr. Obama’s inaction or his attempts to score political points with Latinos in recent weeks. “Obviously, Obama broke his promise to address this issue in the first year,” he said. “Any action that he takes now is motivated purely by politics.”

Reaction to Supreme Court Immigration Decision

WASHINGTON, D.C.–The Hispanic Leadership Fund today released the following statement from its President Mario H. Lopez, reacting to today Supreme Court ruling Arizona’s SB 1070 immigration law: “Today’s Supreme Court ruling shows once again that government expansion is not a constructive way to address concerns over illegal immigration.  The court struck down three of the four issues at stake and the majority decision explicitly states that there could be major Constitutional problems with the implementation of the “papers, please” provision that stands for the moment, as the only relevant issue to that provision addressed in this case was the alleged...

HLF on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation”

Hispanic Leadership Fund President was on NPR earlier today, discussing the announcement by President Obama that he will instruct the Department of Homeland Security to alter its enforcement priorities with regard to students who would be affected by various versions of legislation commonly referred to as the “DREAM Act.”  Lopez talked about the politics behind the decision and about President Obama’s long history of playing political games with the immigration issue: The fact is that, you know, as a senator, I mean, going back to his days in the U.S. Senate, he voted for five different poison pill amendments to...

Reaction to President Obama’s Immigration Announcement

WASHINGTON, D.C.–The Hispanic Leadership Fund today released the following statement from its President Mario H. Lopez in response to President Obama’s announcement that the Department of Homeland Security will place a low enforcement priority on certain individuals who were brought to the United States illegally prior to the age of sixteen, and who meet other criteria: “It is clear that President Obama is pulling yet another political stunt to try to draw attention from the many ways in which he has failed Hispanics across the country.  This is a blatant attempt at pandering in an election year to cover up...

Hispanics Need an All-Out Effort to Combat Obesity

With recent news that about 2.5 million Hispanic adults suffer from diabetes, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and community-based groups are expanding their efforts to reduce the burden of diabetes in the Latino community. Ultimately, progress against diabetes will also depend on attacking the epidemic behind the spread of this life-threatening condition: obesity. While many elements of Latino culture promote healthy lifestyles and long lifespans, other cultural factors foster excessive weight gain and contribute to disproportionate incidences of diabetes, heart disease and several other detrimental conditions within our community. Among all adults, nearly 40 percent of Hispanics have obesity. Weight problems...

Lopez Op-Ed: Washington’s Spending Insanity

HLF president Mario H. Lopez has an opinion essay in the Tampa Tribune touching on the recent debates over federal budgets and spending.  Lopez commends Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) for his budgetary efforts and commitment to curtail government overspending.  Lopez writes: The disastrous failure of discipline and leadership in deficit reduction is a driving force behind the dreadfully sluggish pace of our economic “recovery.” I see every day how Washington’s runaway growth affects the plight of Hispanic families who continue to be hit hard in this economy. Unemployment among Hispanic workers is 10.7 percent — substantially higher than the national...
