Hispanic Leadership Fund President was on NPR earlier today, discussing the announcement by President Obama that he will instruct the Department of Homeland Security to alter its enforcement priorities with regard to students who would be affected by various versions of legislation commonly referred to as the “DREAM Act.” Lopez talked about the politics behind the decision and about President Obama’s long history of playing political games with the immigration issue:
The fact is that, you know, as a senator, I mean, going back to his days in the U.S. Senate, he voted for five different poison pill amendments to kill comprehensive immigration reform bill, the same bill that Republicans were criticized for not supporting. So I mean, I think that he’s playing games with the immigration issue, and he’s using Latinos as political pawns.
