The Hispanic Leadership Fund today issued a statement regarding the Department of Education’s announcement finalizing its “Gainful Employment Rule.”  Today’s newly-minted rule clocks in at 1,000-pages of flawed regulations that will directly harm students.

HLF submitted a filing during the open comment period which noted that the rule would close schools, reduce the flexibility of students to enroll in the programs of their choice, and ultimately increase costs for students.  Our written comments urged the Department to reconsider its Rule and work on solutions that actually empower students enrolled in career colleges.

The following statement can be attributed to Mario H. Lopez, president of the Hispanic Leadership Fund:

“We are disappointed—but not surprised—to see the Department of Education finalize its misguided Gainful Employment Rule. During both the public comment period and our testimony directly to the Office of Management and Budget, we made clear that this Rule would have a significant economic impact and directly harm students, particularly students from underserved communities.

“A college degree and certificate have never been more valuable.  It is time for the Biden administration to recognize the value all schools bring when it comes to developing skills for students to have a successful career and add to our economy.  Students deserve to attend the schools of their choice—without having to worry about the Department of Education locking them out of the classroom.  Our country needs more educational options for people from a wide range of backgrounds, not less.

“The Gainful Employment Rule is deeply flawed and we encourage Congress to take meaningful action that reverses this misguided action and helps ensure opportunity for all students.”
